I am the one, I am the other.
I am the way in, I am the way out.
I am the portal, I am the womb.
I am the potential, I am the manifest.
I am the changer, I am the changed.
Come with your heart, and leave with your soul.

THE DANCE OF POWER
FIRST STEPS
So firm was the belief of the Maori in mana that those who were held to possess it in high degree were credited with amazing powers, such as control over, or power to influence, natural phenomena. For instance, such highly endowed men could . . . cause the sun to shine, mist to disappear, and many other things equally marvelous.
E. BEST, MAORI RELIGION AND MYTHOLOGY
Our car radio suddenly blared an emergency signal as the country western station in Oklahoma interrupted its program. Startled out of a light doze (David was driving), I heard the announcer warn the public about an approaching storm front with severe thunderstorms, high winds, hail, heavy rains, and tornadoes. It was leaving Texas on its way east and was predicted to sweep through Oklahoma that afternoon and evening. Thoroughly awake now, I checked the map and saw that it wouldnât be too much longer before the front entered Tennessee, where we were driving on Interstate 40, headed west toward the front. Despite the clear skies and January sunshine, the news of an imminent change in the weather was not entirely unexpectedâtwo nights before the Weather Channel had described yet another Pacific storm ramming into the California coast, causing flooding, landslides, and snowfalls with attendant avalanche dangerâand heading east. I had hoped that by the time we met up with this storm it would be spent. Instead, the energy intensified as it reconfigured into an enormously long front, razing the countryside in its advance. The possible strategy of driving around the thing was impossible, as the radio announcer said the front stretched from the Gulf of Mexico all the way north to the Great Lakes region.
David was nervous and I was scared. Few situations can make me feel more vulnerable than being caught in the path of a tornado during the nighttime hours in a flimsy motel where I am a stranger. I felt trapped, and though I knew my emotions were disproportionate to the real threat, I couldnât shake off a feeling of impending doom. A day earlier or a day later in our departure from home would have made a difference. How ironic that we had pushed our way through the beginnings of a snowstorm so we could experience clear roads the rest of the way. How ironic that I am a lover of weather and now was biting my nails over a weather experience still hundreds of miles away!
We continued driving west, resigned to our lack of control, and stopped for the night in the Tennessee countryside hamlet of Hurricane Mills. The motel was up on a hillside with woods behind us, and that felt good. We unpacked our car and flipped on the TV.
